The Rise of E-Reading in the Digital Age of Learning

Over the years, the way people discover and learn information has considerably changed. In the past, most people would use printed textbooks to educate themselves on specific topics. However, now, people have a more technological approach and rely on internet sources to read online. To date, digital books have a growing popularity among readers of all ages and it’s not surprising since they offer a great deal of benefits.  E-books offer a less expensive and more environmentally friendly alternative as opposed to their conventional printed counterpart. They are also easily portable and various amounts of books could be accessed within a single click. It is also worth noting that e-books often come with features that make the reading experience much more enjoyable. For instance, if a word is unfamiliar to the reader, they can easily look up the meaning through a quick search. It also allows us to highlight and annotate text without permanently writing on the pages. This is ideal for people who want to take notes but do not want to ruin the book. On top of that, people could be able to read anywhere they want since e-readers are usually backlit, which means that there is no screen glare, so one could read in sunshine as well as in the dark.

The technological aspect of reading digital texts through e-books appeal to a growing segment of the population. E-books also promote literacy development among the youth. This is because their generation are more technologically fluent since they grew up in a world of vast digital advances and innovations. Additionally, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, distance learning has become the new mode of education for most students worldwide. Classes have been held online as an alternative safety measure to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. Consequently, the use of e-books in school has risen with the growth of remote education.  Digital books have allowed teachers and students to adapt to remote learning as they supplement class curriculums since they provide resources without the struggle of looking for a physical copy of the required book. E-books allow students to complete classroom reading assignments or read for pleasure and for this reason, this makes digital books a smart investment for the future. Regardless of purpose, e-books have become an integral part of the digital age and they are here to stay.
